Our Pixel Badlands Project started in 2019 during the COVID outbreak and is now 6-year old. In this journey, we encountered several difficulties, including technical, social-cultural, and educational issues. However, our local partners in ZuoZhen have always gave us the best support. We also found friendships world-wide, giving us inspirations and technical tips. Here is a short overview of what we have done in this 6 years:
- 2019 – Due to COVID-19, for the presentation of students’ installation design for ZuoZhen, we created pixel badlands on gather.town using satellite image as background.
- 2020-2021 – We use illustration software to draw the map, creating the second version of Pixel Badlands. Two matster students theses were related to our metaverse exploration. So far, Pixel Badlands covered the range of Ganlin.
- 2022-2024 – With the increasing collection of local stories, we expand the geographical range from Ganlin to the old town area of ZuoZhen.
- 2023 – We start working with ZuoJheng Elementary School and invite the local children to create their home town on Pixel Badlands.
- 2024-2025 – We got support from NCKU Cross-Disciplinary Research Project and integrate ecological data (mainly birds) into our Metaverse. Also, because the data covers a much wider range. We developed a software to use satellite image to quickly draw the maps. The third version of Pixel Badlands was created.
- 2025 – A new map is created for ZuoJheng Elementary School .
