We recently held an immersive workshop in Zuojheng, exploring the potential of the metaverse to digitally revitalize rural communities. In this hands-on experience, participants engaged in a collaborative game where virtual avatars repaired lantern installations, traveled through time, and explored historical versions of Zuojheng’s old street, blending past and present in a playful yet meaningful way.

The workshop was organized in partnership with 政達 and the local community. Beyond gameplay, we shared ideas, discussed the ongoing development of Pixel Badlands—a metaverse project built over three years using the GIS data of the area—and imagined how technology can celebrate and preserve local history and culture. Dinner, conversation, and creative collaboration made the experience both enjoyable and deeply inspiring.

Looking forward, we plan to connect the digital and physical worlds by anchoring the metaverse in the local community. This approach aims to create meaningful experiences, empower residents, and open new possibilities for cultural, social, and educational initiatives. By combining history, technology, and community engagement, we hope to showcase how innovative digital tools can foster sustainable, locally rooted development in beautiful rural places like Zuojheng.
